The Subject, Its Place and Contribution to the Curriculum

Physical Education has a particular contribution to make to the total development of the young person. It is the one aspect of the child's school life which focuses on the development of motor competence, where the child is the center of the learning process.

In an age when technology and I.T. are making our lives less physically demanding, Physical Education within the school curriculum is becoming increasingly important. P.E. activities provide opportunities for children to participate in vigorous and enjoyable beneficial activities. Physical Education has an important role to play in encouraging young people towards a healthy active lifestyle and in taking up new physical activities that promote the health and social values inherent in P.E.

P.E. provides not only a medium through which children can develop their motor skills, but also lets them discover and use many other aspects relating to other areas of the National Curriculum.

P.E. provides opportunities for self discovery, increase of coherence and self esteem. It is not only success of winning that teaches these qualities but the sense of achievement of ones potential experience by the child. P.E. also provides opportunities for co-operation and collaborative success both with and against peers in a controlled environment which are beneficial to team working and problem solving skills.

Physical Education is a diverse subject that relates to many aspects of curriculum in many forms. At Llangatwg we try our best to underpin many of the themes in all curriculum areas including key skills.

The Aims and objectives of the subject

Aims

1. To maintain and / or stimulate pupil interest and enjoyment in P.E. and to promote health & fitness for current and future lifestyles.
2a. To enable pupils to be familiar with a body of knowledge, principles and vocabulary related to P.E.
b. To enable pupils to see P.E. as:

  • A major feature in our lives related to leisure, employment and culture

  • Part of a wider body of knowledge and skills, e.g. interpersonal and problem solving skills (to include analysis and evaluation of P.E. issues).
c. To enable pupils to understand:

  • And use safe practice and to appreciate it's importance in P.E.

  • The short and long term affects of exercise on the body.

  • The role of exercise in a fit and healthy lifestyle.
3a. To enable pupils to develop a range of desirable personal qualities such as politeness, perseverance, initiative and independence. The establishment of pupil self esteem through the development of physical confidence is a major aim of the department.
b. To enable pupils to work independently and as part of a team in varied activities, so as P.E. contributes to the development of core skills such as communication by speech.
4. To employ teaching methods and resources that allow all pupils (irrespective of their genre, ethnic origin, academic ability, etc.) to have equal access to P.E., and to experience success and enjoyment in their P.E. work.
5a. To develop an awareness in pupils of the implications of sort and physical activity (past and present) for the individual and the local, national and international communities's.
b. To allow pupils to develop informed opinions and to be able to support them by reasonable arguments.

Objectives

The objectives relate directly to the five aims of P.E. at Llangatwg, they intend to show how the aims are actually put into practice.
1. Staff will provide a variety of experiences / activities during a school year.

  • games, gymnastics and swimming;

  • indoor and outdoor activities;

  • individual and team activities;

  • problem solving

  • communicating P.E. ideas to others by means such as speaking;

  • listening and appraising;

  • practicing and refining a skill;

  • using repetition in order to improve.
2a. The National Curriculum Key Stage 3 & 4 P.E. orders together with any GCSE requirements should be used as a basic core for the scheme(s) of work. Staff should encourage pupils to recall and apply their knowledge and skills in familiar and unfamiliar situations.
b. Staff should relate work to other curriculum areas, e.g. IT and appropriate and outside agencies such as clubs, other institutions. Through the use of situations arising in P.E. lessons develop social skills.
c. Pupils should understand verbal and written instructions accurately:

  • Safety is enhanced by - rules, equipment needs, movement of equipment, warm ups, swimming and water awareness.

  • Body responses by - question and answers, body awareness, descriptive accounts (verbal), evaluation.
3a. Lessons should be conducted in a secure, supportive and disciplined manner. The pupils and the staff should interact in a manner that demonstrates mutual respect. Pupils will learn the rules, etiquette, laws and codes for various activities.
b. There should be opportunities for individual and / or group activities so as pupils can express their feelings verbally and learn how to work co-operatively as well as on their own. Staff should encourage pupils to improve in a particular sport or skill over a period of time. Staff should use a reward system, e.g. a merit system and / or a record of achievement. This should encourage pupils to work to their full potential and to experience a sense of achievement.
4a. Pupils are to be encouraged to share their experiences and culture with others in order to enhance the quality of learning. This will be achieved by pupils talking and researching about:

  • Physical activities - research on rules, team play tactics, body movement, health and safety and healthy lifestyle.
b. Staff should attempt not to spend inequitable amounts of time with any one pupil, group of pupils or gender group etc. However, staff often spend considerable amounts of their own time helping individual pupils during, after school and lunchtime clubs.
5. Staff should attempt to show the enjoyment and benefits that P.E. / sport has given to us. This will be done by well chosen resources and carefully phrased comment. The staff will allow opportunities at various times for group discussion. At these times we can listen to each other's views and hopefully reflect upon them - particularly on health and fitness issues.
