5x60 GET WITH IT!

Pupils across Wales are set to experience a new dimension in the way sport and physical activity is delivered in secondary schools. Funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and managed by the Sports Council for Wales, 5x60 is set to change the face of sport provision in schools, transforming playing fields and sports halls into hubs of bustling activity from daybreak to nightfall.

 

5x60 AIMS

Through it's "climbing higher" vision, the Welsh Assembly Government has laid down the fitness gauntlet by setting the target of seeing 90% of children taking part in regular and frequent activity by 2020. 5x60 is rising to the challenge by helping to create the environment necessary for children to take part in extra-curricular sport and physical activity on a regular basis.

THE PROGRAMME

Fully trained 5x60 officers will be deployed into secondary schools to extend the extra-curricular programme and will set their sights on encouraging those who do not take part in sport to "get with it". A host of arranged activities will take place before school, at lunch time, after school and at weekends.

 

THE ROLL OUT

5x60 is being rolled out to secondary schools across the length and breadth of the country in the hope that all schools will be involved in the programme by 2009.

THE ACTIVITIES

Armed with a blank sheet of paper and a multitude of dynamic ideas, the 5x60 officers, together with the pupils, will decide upon the type of activities that they would enjoy participating in.

And the opportunities to get involved are plenty:

• Traditional competitive sports such as football, cricket and netball could develop further opportunities for those that have already been involved in Dragon Sport at primary school.
• School halls and gyms could provide the textbook venue to host informal recreational activities such as dance, aerobics and table tennis.
• Coached activities.
• Why not make use of the welsh natural environment and take part in activities such as mountain biking, hill walking and surfing.

5x60 provides schools with the opportunity to:

• Listen to the needs of the children.
• Provide opportunities that they would like to participate in.
• Be fully inclusive.

By getting involved in the 5x60 programme, young people will then:

• Have ownership of the opportunities that they have selected.
• Enjoy activity
• Participate in lifelong activity in whatever form they enjoy.
