Modern Foreign Languages |

At Llangatwg, all pupils in years 7, 8 and 9 study
French. German is taught to all pupils in Year 9.
The languages department consists of three full time and one part
time teachers, all of whom are language graduates. The staff visit
all nine of our feeder schools once a fortnight throughout the year
to deliver French and German lessons to pupils in Year 6. Therefore,
pupils join Llangatwg with a sound basic knowledge of French and
German vocabulary and structure.
Key Stage 3
In KS3, pupils are taught the basic grammatical structures and a
wide range of vocabulary based around a variety of topics ranging
from basic introductions to discussing films and TV programmes.
Pupils are also taught how to cope in a variety of real situations
from buying drinks and snacks at the cafe to dealing with basic
emergencies abroad.
Key Stage 4
Lessons are varied and interactive, all of our staff have their own
interactive whiteboard and make use of the latest software and
techniques to make lessons as fun and engaging as possible. We are
very proud of our GCSE results and pupils in Key Stage 4 are taught
in small groups in order to give them as much support as possible in
developing their speaking and writing skills.
In response to the declining numbers of pupils opting for MFL
(Modern Foreign Languages) in Wales, we have been involved in many
new and exciting initiatives to provide pupils with alternative and
vocational qualifications.
Certificate in Business Language Competence
Over the past two years, pupils studying GCSE Leisure and Tourism
have completed the CBLC (Certificate in Business Language
Competence) in French to complement their studies and the Department
was involved in the making of two DVDs about alternatives to GCSE in
MFL and raising uptake in KS4.
The DVDs have been distributed to schools all over Wales and
England. It is our intention to continue to provide new
opportunities for pupils at Llangatwg by introducing NVQ business
language units in 2010.
Languages Club
We also run a very successful languages club during Wednesday
lunchtimes. Pupils in Year 7 enjoy a range of language based
activities like food tasting, watching film clips in a foreign
language, performing sketches, visiting French markets in Swansea
and entering language competitions.
Bastille Day
In July, we hold our own Bastille Day celebration in school, where
pupils enjoy a range of fun activities like crepe making, French
crafts, boules competitions and treasure hunts.
Trips Abroad
Trips abroad are always on offer so that pupils have a chance to
practise their language skills in a real-life situation. Plans for
next year include a cross-curricular trip to visit our partner
school in St. Brieuc, Brittany.

Learning a language at Llangatwg is an enjoyable and rewarding
experience with many of our pupils going on to study languages in
sixth form and beyond.
