Key Stage 4

Mathematics covers a wide range of skills and topics grouped into five areas;

·         Number

·         Algebra

·         Geometry & Measure

·         Statistics

·         Using & Applying mathematics

Mathematics is a compulsory subject at Key Stage 4 as it gives you skills and concepts that allow you to be numerate and solve problems in a variety of ways throughout your life.

 At Llangatwg pupils are entered for their GCSE maths course at either

·         Higher tier (grades A*-D)

·         Foundation tier (grades C-G)

If a candidate fails to achieve the minimum mark at each tier their grade will be recorded as a ‘U’.

 At each tier of entry the assessment will consist solely of two exam papers;

  • Paper 1 - Calculator not allowed

  • Paper 2 - Calculator allowed

 Additional Maths

There is an opportunity for a small group of gifted and talented Year 11 mathematicians to study Additional Maths at GCSE level alongside their normal mathematics GCSE. This course introduces A level topics and allows pupils to gain an insight into more complicated mathematical concepts. This course has proved to be an excellent bridging tool between GCSE and A level mathematics.

Mathematics ELQ (Entry Level Qualification)

This course is intended for pupils who are not entered for the current GCSE course. This course is designed to motivate the pupils in order to develop their basic mathematical knowledge and skills. The syllabus follows the National Curriculum for Mathematics at Level 1-3. Some elements of Key Stage 3 & 4 have been incorporated to encourage progression.

Assessment for ELQ

79% of a pupils mark will come from continuous assessment. This is in the form of structured, aural and practical tasks. There is a final end of course exam in Year 11.

Pupils achievement is acknowledged through a system of three levels; 1, 2 or 3.
